We watched Thank You For Smoking to preface more debating activities, as the students were having difficulties defending the opposite of their beliefs when we tried a debate last week. Thank You For Smoking is a great lead in to practicing argument, because the main character makes his living by arguing; by the use of his words and his wit. He doesn’t necessarily believe in what he argues, but the point is, he can do it better than anybody else. We thought this might be particularly motivating for our student who wants to be a lawyer but „can’t” think of any good arguments for what he does not believe in, since he’s not getting paid for it.
